Emission of gases into the atmosphere is strictly regulated.
Since more than 10 years, European directives have been published by the European Commission, e.g. directives 89/369/EEC for municipal solid waste and 94/67/EC for hazardous waste.
Directive no. 2000/76/EC of the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union was adopted on 15 November 2000 and signed on 4 December 2000; this new directive covers the incineration of the municipal solid waste and, hazardous waste as well as the co-incineration of the waste in industrial plants, as cement works for instance
New installations will be required to meet the new emission limit values by no later than 28 December 2002, and existing installations by no later than 28 December 2005.
For other industries not listed in the directive, local regulations will apply.
